Healthy Eating Tips

Here are some healthy eating tips to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet, including information on portion control, food groups, and the importance of a varied diet:

  1. Balance Your Plate: Aim to include a variety of foods from different food groups in your meals. Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, one-quarter with lean proteins (such as poultry, fish, legumes, or tofu), and one-quarter with whole grains (like brown rice or quinoa).
  2. Portion Control: Be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating. Use smaller plates and bowls to help control portions visually. Pay attention to recommended serving sizes listed on food labels and use measuring cups or a food scale if needed.
  3. Include Whole Foods: Choose whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible. These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Whole foods are rich in nutrients and fibre and can help support overall health.
  4. Limit Added Sugars and Saturated Fats: Minimise the consumption of foods high in added sugars and saturated fats, such as sugary drinks, desserts, fried foods, and processed snacks. Opt for healthier alternatives like fruits, unsweetened beverages, and nuts.
  5. Hydrate Well: Drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day. Water is essential for digestion, metabolism, and overall well-being. Limit sugary beverages and prioritise water as your primary source of hydration.
  6. Practice Mindful Eating: Slow down and pay attention to your food while eating. Chew your food thoroughly and savour the flavours. This helps you enjoy your meal, recognise satiety cues, and prevent overeating.
  7. Prioritise Variety: Include a wide range of foods in your diet to ensure you receive a diverse array of nutrients. Incorporate different fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and healthy fats. This helps prevent nutrient deficiencies and promotes overall health. Incorporate herbs and spices.
  8. Plan and Prepare Meals: Take the time to plan and prepare your meals in advance. This can help you make healthier choices, control portion sizes, and avoid relying on unhealthy fast food or convenience options.
  9. Read Food Labels: Learn how to read and understand food labels. Look for products with minimal added sugars, sodium, and unhealthy fats. Pay attention to the ingredient list, and choose foods with recognisable, whole food ingredients.
  10. Seek Professional Advice: If you have specific dietary concerns or health conditions, consider consulting with a nutritionist for personalised guidance. They can provide tailored advice to meet your unique nutritional needs.

Remember, everyone’s nutritional needs are different, so it’s essential to listen to your body and make adjustments that work for you. Incorporating these tips into your lifestyle can help you maintain a balanced and nutritious diet for optimal health.

Healthy Food Pyramid

A nutritious and healthy eating plan typically includes the following core elements:

Variety: Including a wide range of foods from different food groups ensures that you obtain a diverse array of nutrients. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Balance: Balancing the intake of different food groups and portion sizes is crucial. It involves consuming appropriate amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to meet your body’s needs.

Whole Foods: Emphasizing whole, unprocessed foods is important. These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Whole foods are generally more nutrient-dense and contain fewer additives.

Adequate Macronutrients: Ensuring an appropriate intake of macronutrients is essential. Carbohydrates provide energy, so include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Proteins are essential for growth and repair, so choose lean sources like poultry, fish, legumes, and tofu. Fats are important for various bodily functions, so incorporate healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.

Portion Control: Paying attention to portion sizes helps prevent overeating and maintains a healthy calorie balance. It is crucial to be mindful of your body’s needs and avoid excessive portion sizes.

Adequate Hydration: Drinking sufficient water is essential for overall health. It aids digestion, transports nutrients, regulates body temperature, and promotes various physiological functions. Aim to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day.

Limit Added Sugars and Processed Foods: Minimise the consumption of foods and beverages high in added sugars, such as sugary drinks, cakes, biscuits, and processed snacks. These foods offer little nutritional value and can contribute to health issues when consumed in excess.

Moderation: While it is important to make healthy choices, allowing yourself to enjoy occasional treats in moderation is also part of a balanced approach. Restrictive diets can be difficult to sustain, so allowing yourself some flexibility helps maintain long-term adherence to a healthy eating plan.

Mindful Eating: Paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, eating slowly, and savouring the flavours and textures of food can enhance your eating experience and help prevent overeating.

Individualised Approach: Everyone’s nutritional needs and preferences are unique, so it’s important to tailor your eating plan to suit your individual requirements. In a one to one consultation I would personalise the approach to suit your individual needs.

Remember, a nutritious and healthy eating plan is not just about individual meals but rather a holistic approach to nourishing your body and promoting overall well-being.

World Cancer Day – February 4th 2023

February 4th is World Cancer Day. The aim is to inform and encourage people on prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer.

I don’t think there is anyone who is not aware of cancer, who doesn’t know someone who has had the disease, a friend or family member, or who has been impacted themselves.

I think the most powerful message is that at least one third of cancers are preventable, so if that doesn’t give us a reason to champion healthy life and diet choices to help us prevent cancer (and reccurrence) and reduce your risk, I don’t know what does!

According to the World Health Organization, at least one third of common cancers are preventable through a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active.

What does that actually mean in reality?

  • Adopting a healthy diet can have a powerful effect on your health – aim to build your diet around a variety of antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables, nuts, beans, whole grains, and healthy fats.
  • Stop smoking – single largest preventable cause of cancer and not just lung!
  • Reduce and limit alcohol content.
  • Be physically active – MOVE YOUR BODY – avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.

This approach is not just beneficial for cancer prevention and recurrence but also contributes to the prevention of obesity and other chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

No single food by itself can protect you against cancer. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), it is “the synergy of compounds working together in the overall diet that offers the strongest cancer protection.”

So lets not get too hung up on that one superfood, make variety your goal, this is where EAT THE RAINBOW comes in.

Evidence shows a diet filled with a variety of plant-based foods, whole grains and beans, can help reduce cancer risk. Plant-based whole foods are full of high quality natural nutrients/compounds such as antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and other health-promoting properties. These foods are also low in calories and high in fibre, which also helps you achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

So start incorporating this approach to your diet and lifestyle today, to help you live your best healthy life.
